Two people with tattoos and backpacks walk in a forest. Text reads "Summer Tattoo Prep: What You Need to Know Before Booking."

The first day of summer arrives next month—the solstice occurs, the layers come off, and suddenly everyone is ready to finally get the tattoo.

More skin showing. More ideas. More “I’ve been thinking about this forever.”

Good. But summer tattoos require a little more intention before you ever sit in the chair.

Now is the time to prepare! This isn’t about overthinking—it’s about not setting yourself up for a bad experience.

TIMING STILL MATTERS

Before you book, look at your calendar.

If you’ve got:

  • Lake days

  • Vacations

  • Weddings

  • Long stretches in the sun

Plan around them.

Summer doesn’t mean “anytime works.” It means being strategic so your

tattoo isn’t competing with everything else you’ve got going on.

PLACEMENT IS A BIGGER DEAL IN SUMMER

Not all placements are equal when it’s hot out.

Think about:

  • Sun exposure

  • Clothing friction

  • Sweat

Areas that are constantly exposed or rubbing against clothing can make the experience—and the days after—way more uncomfortable than necessary.

If you’re unsure, ask your artist. That’s what they’re there for.

WHAT YOU WEAR MATTERS MORE THAN YOU THINK

This is where people mess up.

You’ll be sitting for a while, and your artist needs clean, easy access to the area being tattooed.

Wear:

  • Loose, breathable clothing

  • Something that exposes the area without constant adjusting

  • Layers if needed (shops can run cool)

Avoid:

  • Tight waistbands on fresh placements

  • Complicated outfits you have to fight with

  • Anything you care too much about getting ink on

Comfort and access. That’s it.

COME PREPARED (NOT HUNGOVER, NOT STARVING)

Basic, but worth saying.

Show up:

  • Hydrated

  • Fed

  • Rested

Summer schedules get chaotic, but your body still needs to cooperate for a solid session.

If you feel off, your tattoo will feel worse. Simple as that.

HAVE YOUR DESIGN DIALED IN

Summer books fill fast. Artists don’t have time for “I’ll figure it out when I get there.”

Know:

  • Your general concept

  • Placement

  • Size range

You don’t need every detail locked, but you should come in with direction.

Respect the process, and you’ll get a better result.

WHERE THE LOYAL SPARROW COMES IN

At The Loyal Sparrow, prep is part of the process—not an afterthought.

Clients are guided on timing, placement, and how to show up ready so the session runs smoothly and the result holds up.

Because a great tattoo doesn’t start when the needle hits.

It starts before you walk in the door.
